West End Bar & Grill

These signs represent a complete package and look to highlight this new upscale bar on the near west side.
There are 3 signs to establish and reinforce the brand, style, logo, and overall image.
One is the round blade sign which includes a clear edge lighted "W" logo hanging above the corner entrance. The other two panel signs line the corner of the building and set the stage for the upscale client base with a combination of design elements and finishes.
The background on these signs are a black matte faux wood grain material with 1,1/2" thick prismatic beveled edge letters, painted in a pearlescent gold mounted on 1" standoffs above the matte black background.
The bright finish against the textured matte background presents an outstanding appearance with a touch of class.
Just one of many ways we can help set your business apart and establish your brand with premium signage that works 24 hours a day.

Fleur d'les

This dimensional pattern is another example of the custom work done here at Wellhouse Woodworks. Our client had discovered this gem on an antique piece of furniture and wanted it duplicated.
By simply using a model and photo of the original we were able to duplicate several pieces in red oak. With a tiny bit of finishing and hand work, these will fit right in and match beautifully.
When it comes to architectural artistry and creative embellishments, give us a call.

Happy St.Patrick's Day

This project included close collaboration with our good friends at www.raywray.com who design & install beautiful custom bars.
Photos of some of the custom designed elements appear in earlier posts as we progressed in the design and fabrication phases.
The signs, custom carved corbels, and oval "O'Toole's" Medallions were our contibution to this fresh new upgrade. You can see before and after photos on the web at the Timothy O'Toole's Pub web site but these are the current renovation photos. Just in time for St.Patrick's day here in Chicago where the river runs Green and everyone is Irish.

a Post for Knewel Posts

These creative pieces will end up on a beautiful new stair case. They compliment the home owners Asian bamboo and reed carpet design. Manufactured in maple on our dimensional CNC routing equipment, these radiused reeds stand proud on the staircase knewel posts at the top and bottom of the stair case.
Unique designs for unique individuals.
When its time to make your vision come to life, Wellhouse Woodworks is ready to help.

Got you covered HEAD to TOE

These photos are of a unique Headboard and Footboard we were commissioned for by a local designer. They are a layered shaddow box style design with each layer of depth in the rectangular cut outs taking you deeper and deeper into the night.

The finished work will be painted and become a nice contempory piece of furniture.

Just another example of what can be done when creative design meets our CNC fabrication capability.

Out Front

Well designed signs add a new dimension to your business and command attention.
This project hangs on main street in one of our local towns to put their business image
OUT FRONT.

It's a good example of what our custom CNC routing and premium finishing can do to add a new dimension to an otherwise flat looking sign

You can see the 3rd complimentary vinyl panel sign below that will be in the parking lot area behind the building.

Dimensional Art with a Splash of color

Once we finish our work, our client adds another dimension to their finished product. In this case they added a Splash of RED to the Gator foam letters to make an Outstanding Display.

Da Bears, Champions on many levels

Ok, they didn't quite go all the way BUT they did get us to the BIG SHOW. So us Chicago folks are still proud of the home team. Along the way we wanted to show some home town support and fashioned this 3 layered colored Acrylic logo.

This is a Blue background 1/4" acrylic panel with an 1/8" thick white C overlay, topped off with the 1/8" thick orange C to complete the 3 layered look, depth, and dimensional levels we wanted to achieve.

Combining materials and layering letter or logo elements is something to keep in mind to
stand out with outstanding signs.

Dimensional Display elements

Gator Foam is another nice material our clients use for dimensional letters, Logos, signs, and trade show displays.
It can be used in many ways to develop dimensional depth plus it can be painted, covered with Vinyl, stacked in layerd art, or combined with other materials to create an outstanding image.
These are part of a convention display and we should have photos soon of the finished display.
For now, just think of the possibilities and let us know when we can help.

Add Metal to the Message

There are endless possibilities when it comes to sign materials and finishes. While each have their place, dimensional signs just seem to attract more attention.
Maybe it's the depth of the sign elements, maybe it's the color selection, finish or maybe it's how these elements come together in a final design.

One thing is certain, you know it when you see it.

We post these photos just for that reason. If you see something you like, it's a lot easier to describe with a photo than a sketch.

This is a letter and logo reception area group fabricated in brushed aluminum on a 1" thick black foam substrate. It will be applied to an interior wall as individual elements and make a great 1st impression.
This material can be supplied in brushed or shiny gold and silver on white or black substrate material in various thicknesses. It can also be used for exterior presentations.
It makes a nice presentation alone but can also be combined with other materials and elements to make your sign stand out.
Stand OUT with outSTANDING signs :-)

Yes, we can help with your Vinyl panels too

This photo is one of 2 signs we have in fabrication. The dimensional main street entrance sign which will hang in front of the business office is still in process. This one is a complimentary sign for the parking lot where some nice but secondary signage was needed.
To maintain continuity and a high quality image, we filled the secondary need with this 3'x6' panel sign without breaking the budget.
The anchor main street dimensional sign will be added soon so you can see the total image.

So when it's time to put some "sizzle" into your signage that will draw in new customers, we would love to work with you on the total experience high quality signage can provide.
Its all about appealing signs which convey the best image for your business.

You only get one chance to make a good first impression.
Which signs get your attention?
The unique well designed and made signs or ones that seem to blur together?

Tee it up

Signs and architectural accents just seem to have more sizzle when we add depth and dimension to them. It's one of those situations where "you know it when you see it" but it's not always easy to define exactly why the piece stands out. It's just more attractive than the flat vinyl or 2 dimensional art and makes a more eye catching design.

With Spring around the corner, we were thinking of Golf and added this piece to our growing collection of design elements. These and other custom elements are available for sign makers, gifts, or accent pieces for your next project.

Of course we also can help on the total design and complete fabrication of unique signage and architectural elements.

Some fun new 3D items

Occasionally we have some time to experiment with new designs and ideas. As we develop these techniques, they frequently give folks ideas about what they might like.
They also help us show some of our capability and make new ideas easier to develop.
Here are a few for your enjoyment and consideration. We are happy to develop unique designs for just about any application.
Enjoy

Locomotion

Every day I pass a nice theme restaurant called 2TOOTS Steam Whistle Grill that delivers lunch to the counter on a model railroad car. I drove by this morning and noticed that there was no sign on the building and thought I would make a model of an old steam engine just for fun to show them.
This model is 12" diameter and 1,1/2" deep in its unfinished state. We could paint, metalize, or finish it in a number of ways to create the final piece. Of course it could also be as large as you like.
These types of custom 3 dimensional creations add a very nice design element for signs or other architectural accents. So if you're looking for that unique piece to attract an audience, customers, or for that special someone, we would love to bring your vision to life.
I hope you enjoy it.

One Dog Night

A while ago, a friend received his new purebred puppy and he seemed to need a suitable sign for him. We forgot all about it until recently when we were told he spent the night on some highway high in the Rockie mountains with traffic stopped and 100MPH winds rocking the cars. With a 60 mile back up and traffic shut down for the night, all he had to keep warm was his new friend Nakoah, now much larger at 95+ pounds and full of his winter coat to keep warm.
So these photos are for George and his new pup Nakoah who helped him make it through his Rockie Mountain One Dog Night. We hope you enjoy them.
Of course if we can help design and create a custom sign for your favortite pet or friend, we would love to help out

On the Set of Square Peg's

A while back we did an interesting piece for a movie set. It incorporated clear plexiglass which was covered with an Oak veneer, V carved text, then burned with a torch for the final aging effects. Once completed this piece was backlighted with candles for the final scene.
The short film is a project of my son Ben's film titled "Square Pegs" which will premiere at the Downers Grove Tivoli sometime in January and no doubt in many independant film festivals.
As an aside the Tivoli is the 2nd oldest movie theater in the US, West of the Appellation Mountains originally built for "The Talkies" and its a beautifully restored theater complete with the rising pipe organ and organist. You really need to see it yourself to appreciate it. So maybe we'll see you there at the "After hours Film Society's" Tivoli premier in January 07.

The Show must go on!

Our custom sign work invloves just about anything from commercial to residential, and industrial clients. When it comes to Trade show exhibits, it's usually something that needs to be custom and quick. NO PROBLEM!
We frequently turn this type of Gator Foam letters and logos around in a few days but always in time for the show.
These are a portion of some letters we were asked to provide for one of the many shows here at Chicago's McCormick convention center.
So if it's a trade show schedule, or a commercial property sign, let Wellhouse Woodworks show you what we can do for you.

Dimensional Medallions ready for installation

We were commissioned to help with a Downtown remodeling project which is still underway for a well established pub. As the final fabrication and finishing progresses, we will publish more photos plus the final creation. On this project we collaborated with a great Company that specializes in custom period interior bars and are having a lot of fun working with them on the artistic details. You can see their work at the link on our website or go to www.raywray.com. Impressive work!
These are some custom dimensional medallions which will accent part of the exterior design.
So if you're considering some unique accent or signature pieces or an entire custom project, we would love to hear from you.

One of our 2006 Charitable projects

We occasionally get requests to donate some of our time and services and are happy to share our capabilities for a good cause. While we can't describe what we did or what is was for, this photo may give you a clue as to what we were up to recently. I think the project will be made public on January 17th for those who tune in to the right TV station so stay tuned for more details.

This is a project we volunteered to be part of for a good cause. That's about all I can tell you right now so until we can release more information, we hope you have fun guessing what it is.

Architectural Artistry

These designs are the result of a client request to fabricate several rather plain corbels. The original design was a simple shape with no dimensional detail. Once we understood the application we suggested the added V routed dimensional option shown here. I think you'll agree these both turn a simple outlined shape into a eye catching piece of art that will greatly enhance the appearance of the project.

Just one of the services we provide to add the sizzle to an otherwise ordinary piece.

Custom Medallions for a unique accent

Part of our work includes unique designs we can produce to develop a clients ideas or style into a final sign or architectural accent piece. These Custom designed dimensional Medallion reliefs will become the key accent elements on a new sign and exterior remodeling project we were commissioned to provide.
More photos on other components and phases of this project will be posted as we complete them. Until then, we look forward to designing or fabricating signature accent pieces to realize your design vision.

Speaker of the house

With all the new Home Entertainment Systems being installed, we run across folks who want to create their entire environment; including the fabrication of custom speakers and accessories. These boxes are for a client who decided the best way to get what he wanted in precision cabinet box frames was to ask us to cut the rectangles and rabet cuts for mounting his speakers. That way they would all be identical and he could simply assemble them.
Why spend your time cutting circles, squares, shapes, and details when Wellhouse Woodworks can fabricate the components on our precision CNC routing equipment?
We find that part entertaining and look forward to hearing from you on your custom project.

Custom Oak trim to match

Custom trim to match that historical renovation is another of our unique capabilities. Liner and radius trim are common in the shop and we're always adding new profiles. These are red oak casings, base, shoe, and base cap profiles created to help the homeowner with a perfect match in their new addition.

Ready for Spring

We published some earlier renderings on our web site of this monument but now its real. This design was the result of close customer collaboration, nice graphics in our two color polymer materials, and the addition of removeable flower pots ready for spring planting. We think it's a great piece and know that it will really set off this property and showcase the tenants.
Just one of the many custom projects we've been fortunate to participate in.

Custom signs = custom letters

This pilot is of a letter we are developing for a new commercial sign. I'm sure we will publish more as it progresses but this one is a customer sample to determine if this font, size, shape, and overall appearance will be suitable for the final design.
Its a dimensional radiused letter 1,1/4" thick that will be mounted proud of the back paneland finished in a bronze color. The key is having a sample in your hands to help realize your design vision.
Let us help turn your vision into reality. Enjoy!

Turn, Turn, Turn

We haven't posted new photos for a while as we've been moving our shop over the last 60 days but we have been busy along the way. Recently we were commissioned to fabricate some custom turnings to match a photo for a set of vanity cabinets in paint grade poplar. Here are the 8 units needed for this custom design. As we build on previous success, we always think about custom turnings as one of our key capabilities and welcome new projects of this type.

STOP Red Counter

Heres a new project we just completed for a pet food store counter top. Not something we do every day but it turned out very nice and fit perfectly. All parts and formica were cut on our CNC router for precision and quality.
Have something unique you want fabricated? Give us a call for a design consultation and budgetary estimate. We love new challenges and unique design projects.

Fun, Memorable & Effective

We always try to enhance designs but once in a while a client gives us complete "creative license". This client is remodeling their Lumber yard that caters to residential construction contractors and homeowners.
We could have produced some conventional(boring)signs but chose to make them a bit more fun. We hope they put a smile on their customers face and help make their experience a memorable one.

If you want help designing a memorable sign, we would love to help you realize your vision.

Looking Good!

These signs are an alternate to the Tan/Green signs we frequently make. They are Green/Tan, but as you can see that subtle shift in the color sequence makes quite a difference.
These will reside in a North West Chicago Suburb at the entrance to a very nice residential complex and look great for years to come.
Same easy maintainance and long life as our other signs with a nice new design and reverse color combination.
If you are looking to enhance the image of your development, golf course, or business, give us a call to see what we can do for you.

Lakes & Boats; Homes & Signs

Earlier we posted a few Redwood and Mahogany examples and a 3d Muskie sign to inspire ideas and exhibit a few techniques. A new client incorporated some of the materials and shapes to achieve her own personal vision.
You might notice that the grain pattern on this hand selected Redwood is positioned so the wavy grain at the water level compliments the water artwork effect in this design. Subtle but important details like this are important to us when we make these custom items.
One of a kind personalized signs and plaques make truly unique gifts for those special friends and relatives.
We hope you like this one and welcome the opportunity to create a personalized piece for you.

PERFECT for Garden art

There are several examples of our copolymer dual color plastic routed signs on our web site and here on the blog. I don't know why it hasn't come up before but this is a GREAT application for this material.
The extreme weather and seasonal changes, the pesticides and fertilizers, the dirt and grass clippings, not to mention that sprinkling would destroy a painted wood sign is a very short time. Probably in a year or less.
This customer saw the merits of our material and made a beautiful selection for this routed Garden Memorial sign.
The applications people think of always amaze me but this one's a real winner.
Easy maintaince, won't rot, rust, or chip and it will last for years and years. The sprinklers will even wash it off on a regular basis.
FANTASTIC application we hope we can make one for your garden or special outdoor space.

It's a Beauty

We have several friends who are always doing interesting things and come up with some really cool ideas and designs.

We have been collaborating with one of them who came up with these designs and thought we should share them with you.

These are beautiful walnut and oak "Pub Tables" with glass tops and custom dimensional topographical art inserts under glass.
A great table design, high quality fabrication and finish, and a beautiful custom insert of the Great Lakes or other topographical art can be provided. If you are furnishing or remodeling your restaurant, lounge, boat, or office; you can contact Bob Standard for more details at

Hassle free custom arches!

It's been a while since we discussed our custom arches but they are still one of our featured products. We take the hassle out of the process for local lumberyards, contractors, millwork shops, and homeowners. That simply means we take on site measurements, fabricate, deliver and make sure they fit the first time. No need to spend your valueable time or that of your employees to measure, make templates, mail details and expedite long distance. Better yet, IF we make a mistake, you don't pay for it. We simply make it right.

So with stock profiles in 2 to 5 days and new customs in 1 to 3 weeks, why not let us save you time and the hassle on your arches so you can move on to the important issues?

It Just makes sense

The two color polymer material we talk about continues to make sense for folks who want a modest price, dimensional sign, that will last practically forever. The easy maintainance, great looks, weather proof properties, plus no peeling paint just makes sense.
This one has some very delicate details and a terriffic design which will create a lasting upscale impression.
The owner will be proud to display and send a high quality message about their business with this two sided sign.
You too can have this type of signage and know it will be there for years to come. Give us a call to see what we can do to enhance your business image and attract more clients for you.

The Apple is ripe

Earlier we posted a few photos of a sign in progress. It was made for a good friend and client who had expanded to a new facility and needed a quality sign suitable for his level of custom craftsmanship.
This technique for painted raised letters and logo is a nice choice for a quality outdoor sign with IMPACT. It incorporates custom dimensionally routed "Apple",raised text, website, and a dimensional border. I think you will agree it's a great first impression to promote his award winning custom cabinet shop..

7/11/06

Passionate about Wildlife

This is another sign using the Tan/Green color combination that lasts forever. These always create a bit of a "WOW" factor when folks finally see their ideas turned into a custom piece. In this case the sign will end up on a private wildlife preserve and make a beautiful statement about the owner and his passion for conservation.
Outdoor scenes and wildlife add that special personal touch to a resort or favorite week end get away place. We can create any animal or scenic background in 2D or 3D designs for a unique signature piece and hope to make one for you.

Personalized Gifts

We recently had the pleasure of hosting several friends and family guests here for our daughters wedding. During the visits several of the family members fascinated by our sign making capabilities asked for a few custom pieces. These are the results of their creative thinking for signs, name spelling puzzles, and gifts for friends. The puzzle for Jackson will be painted in different colors and help him learn the alphabet and colors as he approaches his 2nd birthday. The F22 Raptor sign is for a cousin who is focused on entering the air force academy, and the redwood signs are gifts for some of the wedding party.
Enjoy and let us know if we can personalize something special for you.
