While each have their place, dimensional signs just seem to attract more attention.
Maybe it's the depth of the sign elements, maybe it's the color selection, finish or maybe it's how these elements come together in a final design.

One thing is certain, you know it when you see it.

We post these photos just for that reason. If you see something you like, it's a lot easier to describe with a photo than a sketch.

This is a letter and logo reception area group fabricated in brushed aluminum on a 1" thick black foam substrate. I drove by this morning and noticed that there was no sign on the building and thought I would make a model of an old steam engine just for fun to show them.
This model is 12" diameter and 1,1/2" deep in its unfinished state. We could paint, metalize, or finish it in a number of ways to create the final piece. Of course it could also be as large as you like.
These types of custom 3 dimensional creations add a very nice design element for signs or other architectural accents. With a 60 mile back up and traffic shut down for the night, all he had to keep warm was his new friend Nakoah, now much larger at 95+ pounds and full of his winter coat to keep warm.
So these photos are for George and his new pup Nakoah who helped him make it through his Rockie Mountain One Dog Night. It incorporated clear plexiglass which was covered with an Oak veneer, V carved text, then burned with a torch for the final aging effects. Once completed this piece was backlighted with candles for the final scene.
The short film is a project of my son Ben's film titled "Square Pegs" which will premiere at the Downers Grove Tivoli sometime in January and no doubt in many independant film festivals.
As an aside the Tivoli is the 2nd oldest movie theater in the US, West of the Appellation Mountains originally built for "The Talkies" and its a beautifully restored theater complete with the rising pipe organ and organist. You really need to see it yourself to appreciate it. So maybe we'll see you there at the "After hours Film Society's" Tivoli premier in January 07.

The Show must go on!

Our custom sign work invloves just about anything from commercial to residential, and industrial clients. I don't know why it hasn't come up before but this is a GREAT application for this material.
The extreme weather and seasonal changes, the pesticides and fertilizers, the dirt and grass clippings, not to mention that sprinkling would destroy a painted wood sign is a very short time. Probably in a year or less.
This customer saw the merits of our material and made a beautiful selection for this routed Garden Memorial sign.
The applications people think of always amaze me but this one's a real winner.
Easy maintaince, won't rot, rust, or chip and it will last for years and years. The sprinklers will even wash it off on a regular basis.
FANTASTIC application we hope we can make one for your garden or special outdoor space.

It's a Beauty

We have several friends who are always doing interesting things and come up with some really cool ideas and designs.

We have been collaborating with one of them who came up with these designs and thought we should share them with you.

These are beautiful walnut and oak "Pub Tables" with glass tops and custom dimensional topographical art inserts under glass.
A great table design, high quality fabrication and finish, and a beautiful custom insert of the Great Lakes or other topographical art can be provided. We take the hassle out of the process for local lumberyards, contractors, millwork shops, and homeowners. That simply means we take on site measurements, fabricate, deliver and make sure they fit the first time. No need to spend your valueable time or that of your employees to measure, make templates, mail details and expedite long distance. Better yet, IF we make a mistake, you don't pay for it. We simply make it right.

So with stock profiles in 2 to 5 days and new customs in 1 to 3 weeks, why not let us save you time and the hassle on your arches so you can move on to the important issues?

It Just makes sense

The two color polymer material we talk about continues to make sense for folks who want a modest price, dimensional sign, that will last practically forever. The puzzle for Jackson will be painted in different colors and help him learn the alphabet and colors as he approaches his 2nd birthday. The F22 Raptor sign is for a cousin who is focused on entering the air force academy, and the redwood signs are gifts for some of the wedding party.
Enjoy and let us know if we can personalize something special for you.

Custom Advertising bulletin board

They say it pays to advertise so I thought we may as well get some exposure on this new project. It's a custom ad board which our customer provides at no charge to clients and generates revenue from the advertising inserts. This project is a 5' x 10' bulletin board, white erase marker header, business card and literature rack holder for 12 advertisers. Our contribution was the modular design for ease of installation,ad replacement, and fabrication.
While we don't typically advertise ourselves as "furniture builders" or "cabinet makers" we do take on custom projects like this one and would welcome yours.

A new dimension to attract attention

As we develop new signs and designs, we always think about materials and methods that will provide a different artistic impression. This is a project for a homeowner who just was not going to join the "tear down" trend so prevalent these days. They have a beautiful historic home but, the trim is no longer available with the same profiles.
It just wouldn't be right to abandon the look or have any mismatch on their new renovation; Would it?
Wellhouse Woowdworks was happy to custom duplicate a complete set of window casings, window stools, aprons, arches and back bands to help them upgrade to new windows but keep the trim consistent throughout their remodeling project. We appreciate the opportunity to make a bit of history of our own for others to appreciate long after we're gone. This is one you certainly have heard about but probably never realized the lengths folks will go to in the name of research. Yes these are Mice and Rat scientific research cages. They still are trying to determine the effects of "RF" radio frequency waves on humans. You know; the stuff that radiates from your cell phones.
Our part of the story is represented in these photos of slotted and drilled polypropylene and polycarbonate covers on the yellow fiberglass frame that holds the "non-metalic" cages. It seems those pesky rodents have a propensity for chewing through just about anything. It seems we are pretty good at making precision custom forms, arch blanks, and clamping forms some of our customers find very helpful and cost effective.
Rather than taking valuable journeymen's time to cut, saw, or route these "single use production forms", we import dimensional drawings and run them on our CNC machine. The customer receives perfect forms in hours or days. That way the skilled folks in the shop can get the serious work done with bending, laminating, and profiling.
It's been said that "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder",and we think these forms are beautiful.

Letters and Logos

A while back, we posted a note about some foam letters we fabricated. The latest request came from a display company that makes lots of beautiful trade show booths and displays but they do not make their own dimensional letters or logos. These are cut in 2" thick Gator foam which our customer will apply vinly colors for the final sign.
These could also be metalized with our brass, silver,or copper finishes for a metal letter design like the brass ring or silver lizard.
Our equipment is ideal for many sign materials and we were happy to help make the show deadline.
Next time you just want something cut out to a specific shape, give us a call. Recently we were asked about some 18" x 24" FOR SALE signs. These signs are used by Realtors and Builders to advertise their properties but they get beat up quickly. Since they are steel with vinyl or painted surfaces, it doesn't take much time to get rusted, bent, and just worn out. Not the best image to attract a buyer.
We provided our 2 color polymer material for a no maintaince, long lasting, and cost effective solution. Not only will they look better, they will last longer, won't rust, fit into the same frames, and are easily maintained.
Weather you are a Builder or Seller, you're sure to attract more Buyers with a fresh looking custom routed sign. Why not give us a try next time those tired old steel signs get rusted and worn out?

Catch the Brass Ring!

We once took a ride on an original style carrousel at Martha's vineyard which still had Brass Ring holders. Back in the day a child would ride around the carrousel on the beautifully carved and painted Horses, and attempt to "catch the Brass Ring" from its holder. Believe me, its not as easy as it sounds. Those who caught the Brass Ring won a carvival prize and bragging rights as a memento for their skill and accomplishment.
This routed relief can be seen in earlier posts before finishing. Here it has been finished with a metalic Brass finish and a patina to truly age the piece. This design was created for a mirror frame but it could easily be for a ceiling medalion, picture frame, or any type of architectural embellishment. You too can "Catch the Brass Ring" when you put Wellhouse Woodworks to work on your next custom project.

Making it Easy

This series shows a unique design we provided a property management client to accomplish 5 goals. Think of it as recycled milk jugs. It carves very nicely, lasts forever, modestly priced, and is easy to maintain. The added benefit is "graffiti resistance" since paint doesn't stick to it. I will be adding links to our web site, www.wellhousewoodworks.com
so those interested can gain more knowlege and technical details on many of the materials we commonly use. By using modern EFIS construction and finishing techniques we end up with a great look, long life, easy maintainance, and installation.
Surface finishes range from a stucco look to flagstone, metal, wood, bamboo, or a hybrid of several material finishes.
Add any number of lettering styles, sign face techniques, or materials for a truly unique image. Custom graphics, logos, routed into our Polymer materials make a low maintaince, long lasting impression. This monument is 48" x 96" and incorporates the client logo in our Tan/Green color combination with painted surfaces to match the complex brick and awning colors. That's our daughter Whitney who was a great helper on this project.

We've seen the light!

Programming and operating a CNC machine is fun and challenging. One must remember that the design and program files can only do so much. It still takes a person to make sure the results meet our customers expectations. One new adaptation we find helpful is a laser light guide. Not only is it easier to see, it provides a precision reference point to insure accurate tool registration. It's not rocket science but, it sure helps deliver a high quality precision product. One of the nice ones is really good for everyone. The polymers used from recyled plastic, like milk jugs are converted into a 2 color sheet which we carve into custom signs. The good news is this material is great in all weather conditions and delivers a long lasting professional image with practically no maintaince or wear. Hopefully, it also saves some redwoods along the way. We've done many of this type and our clients are very pleased with the great custom look at a modest price.

And then there are Turnings.

We don't try to compete with your local Home depot's so when it comes to turnings, folks either want something "conventional" or something "uniquely personal". The unique part is where we come in. We were commissioned to produce a repeating 3 pattern design for a historical staircase renovation project. The client wanted a repeating triple turning pattern design they enviisioned and this is what it ended up like. They liked it and we were happy to help turn their idea into reality.

Arches are special

From the beginning, we have attempted to produce unique items for unique clients. One area of particular interest is custom arched trim. It seems large factories aren't really too interested in these little head aches but we love them. To assist our local builders, lumber yards, cabinet makers, or others who need arches; we provide a full service from on site measurement, to final delivery. Along the way we cut precision arches from computer design, profile the shape, deliver it to the site, and insure a precision fit.
No surprises. So if you want to reduce the stress of measuring, ordering, waiting, reordering, and hoping your arch will fit correctly, we would love to hear from you.

HDU painted outdoor sign

Double sided 1.5"/ 3.0" thick sign routed and painted with MDO center stiffener give this sign a robust look.
V carved letters and painted finish produce very nice look for this logo plus we didn't need to chop down any more redwoods!

Signs are fun

As my good friend Ken and I returned from a spring "Shop Bot Jamboree" in NC we were inspired by hundreds of others and our heads were filled filled with cool ideas. It became apparent that our sign making capabilities were truly remarkable. Admittedly there was a lot to learn but nothing we weren't capable of. So in addition to our custom trim profiling and custom turnings; signs became a creative and rewarding part of the journey. I hope you enjoy the photos and the assorted commentary that comes with the territory of this Blog.
This is our 1st sign for a local retail mall establishment.
